Jonas Lundqvist
Jonas Lundqvist was born and raised in Finland. He started training classical ballet at the age of nine. Upon graduating from the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm, Jonas worked with the Finnish National Ballet in Helsinki and later with the Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia as a soloist, dancing a wide range of leading roles from both the classical and the contemporary repertory. He traded his slippers for a camera in the spring of 2002.
Dancing requires an instinctive attention to the subtleties of shape and movement. Photography allows for him to observe these contours in the outer world. Such moments emerge from gestures, symmetry, light. He manipulates the medium to have the image conform to his subjective interpretation of the world. What Jonas shoots does not act as evidence of a time or place but evidence of a thought or feel.
